CY-Connecting Youth SAP  Counselor

What is a Student Assistance Program (SAP)?
Student Assistance Programs can be found in schools throughout the United States.  The SAP program is concerned with building students' developmental assets and resiliency, delivering prevention education in and out of the classroom and facilitating student leadership programs.  By being located within the school, CY SAP Counselors help to build better linkages among students, their families, school personnel, and community service agencies. An SAP program is also designed to identify students dealing with their own or someone else's substance use problems, intervening, and referring them to community agencies or private clinicians for more specialized care, if appropriate.
What does an SAP Counselor do?
    CY SAP Counselor's responsibilities include:
    • giving educational presentations to students and community groups
    • promoting statewide campaigns about making healthy choices & tobacco prevention
    • supporting individuals and groups of students who need information, support, or are affected by their own or someone else’s use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.
