Food Service - School Nutrition Program Informationkids eating lunch

Greetings,

I would like to extend a warm welcome back to school to the Hinesburg community from your school’s cafeteria.

The HCS cafeteria serves breakfast and lunch daily.  We proudly prepare all of our meals on site.  We strive to serve nutritious, wholesome food items each and every day.  We do have vending machines which offer  healthier food options than traditional vending machines.  Beginning this school year our vending machines will only be available after school hours as recommended by the USDA.  Our cafeteria staff includes a Cafeteria Supervisor and a team of three food service staff members.

Beginning this year there are new USDA guidelines requiring all schools to serve meals with twice as many fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, less sodium and fat. The guidelines were mandated by the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act signed by President Obama in December of 2010 and will go into effect this school year.   HCS proudly complies with these new USDA guidelines.

Beginning this year  our lunch periods will be 20 minutes long.  In an effort to create smaller lunch groups, we have created an additional lunch period.  We believe this will improve the lunch room experience.

HCS strives to serve whole grain breads and brown rice.  The only white grain we currently serve would be our pasta.  With our students help this year, we will find a whole grain pasta that will meet the taste requirements of our students.  HCS serves fresh fruit and vegetables daily.   We serve over 5 different fresh fruits every week.  We serve a variety of colorful vegetables every day.  HCS cafeteria rarely serves desserts. We offer 100 percent orange juice, fat free or low fat white milk and low fat chocolate milk every day.  We will no longer offer chocolate milk at breakfast.  All soups are homemade and we never fry any of our food.

HCS offers a “hot lunch” entree, a colorful Fruit and Vegetable Bar and a pre-made-to-order" sandwich bar.  Students who order the “hot lunch” or a made-to-order sandwich are always welcome  to choose vegetables and fruit from our fantastic Fruit and Vegetable Bar. Our goal is for our students to be exposed to as many fruits and veggies as possible.  We offer many options because we believe that students will eat what they choose.

We also have a very limited number of a la carte items for purchase. For example, your child may choose to buy low fat yogurt or a milk, fruit of choice to supplement their lunch from home. Apples are available everyday all day if a student desires a healthy snack. Milk .50 cents. Juice .50 cents. Yogurt .75 cents

HCS operates as a cashless cafeteria. We no longer accept cash at the cash register. All breakfast and lunches can be pre-paid by depositing money on your students account in two ways.
  1. Online at www.mylunchmoney.com either with a credit card/debt card
  2. By check / cash, payable to Hinesburg Community School, which can either be mailed to the school @ HSC, 10888 Route 116, Hinesburg, Vermont, 05461, or drop the deposit off at the main office.
