Middle School General Music

Middle school general music classes are taught by Karla Kennedy. These classes run on a 6 week rotation. It is a four year curriculum, ensuring that the students have a variety of musical experiences over the course of four years.

For the 5/6 music classes, each rotation we will focus on:

Weekly "vitamins": This is a fun once-a-week look at various aspects of musical notation: the staff, measures, reading treble and bass clef notes. The students will have a brief lesson on the "vitamin" of the week, and then complete a short worksheet.

Listening journals: In accordance with the Common Core, twice a week students will listen to a piece of music, read a short paragraph regarding the piece or composer, and answer 2-3 short questions based on the piece or composer.

Rhythmic dictation: Students will learn to hear and dictate short rhythm examples, using half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes.

African Drumming: This is a two year study of the rhythms and cultures of African drumming. This unit ends with a small group performance of a student-created drum ensemble.

Timbre: During one of their years in 5/6 music, they will take a closer look at the instruments in all four families-string, woodwind, brass and percussion. They will learn how sound is produced on each instrument and they will learn to recognize the instruments aurally. 

Composer Study-Beethoven: During their other year of 5/6 music, they will take an in-depth look at one of music's greatest composers, Ludwig van Beethoven. 

Stomp: This is also a two year unit of study where the students create music using non-traditional instruments, such as trash cans, chairs, pencils, water bottles, etc. This is a favorite of all the students!
 
For the 7/8 music classes, each rotation we will focus on:

Listening journals:  In accordance with the Common Core, once a week students will listen to a piece of music, read a short paragraph regarding the piece or composer, and answer 2-3 short questions based on the piece or composer.
